July 18th in year nineteen hundred and thirty-seven is the birthday of HST, he would have been 78.

I did consider writing a post, but the though led to celebration and that led to many things not getting done, which then led to agonizing reappraisals…..

In starting this project, which began as various bookmarks and saved citations and images, I knew not of the depth and scope of Gonzo.  My impetus for the site is on some level academic, a nice curated bibliography that is extensive enough to catch the fun and comprehensive enough to be useful for research.

It eased the pain not having HST around.  No more weird posts on Hey Rube, no more weird news stories about a crazed journalist tossing flaming blowup dolls in traffic while holding a bottle of Wild Turkey threating vengeance.  Who will rise to beat back the swine and crush the bastards with biblical vengeance like the walls of Jericho?

Researching for the site, I knew about Transmetropolitan and Hunter Gathers from The Venture Bros. and thought I was truly in the know.   I knew not of the plays, all of Ralph Steadman’s works, the books on Oscar Zeta Acosta, and many other interesting tidbits, dissertations, and the like.

Many have taken the Gonzo flag and ran into the fray.  There are many who got liquored up and wrote gibberish, trying imitate their hero and good for them.  If HST rewrote authors he liked to get the feel for it, I say there is no shame in picking up Gonzo and getting the feel for it.  I just ask you take care, the world needs you healthy and free.  Other than that, go at it.

That may be the handle for my interest in this site, I hope it helps to corrupt the youth.

Lloyd Dobler: I don’t want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don’t want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed. You know, as a career, I don’t want to do that.

Interestingly enough, that quote is from Say Anything, Lloyd is played by a friend of HST John Cusack.

Indeed, the world is filled with the merchant class, everyone is selling their service or selling their service to sell a product which is often themselves.  To dedicate your time to such things as the arts, philosophy, social justice, fun and literature is to kick yourself out of the mainstream.  I’m not talking as a job, I’m taking about taste, and one lives and dies by one’s taste.

And the thought of new generations of Gonzo fans, the retellings and reiterations, the tributes and parodies serves to establish that Gonzo is a real thing.  And as for the swine my friends, the voices of Gonzo are to meet out justice.
